Building off a weekend of redemption where the Muskies took two games from IU, including a 5 - 0 shutout, the X men closed out the winter semester with two hard fought wins over the Cardinals from Lousiville
On Friday night the Muskies got down early, giving up a goal just twenty five seconds into the contest. In the past, that might have been too much for them to rebound from but they showed great perservance and composure. The contest was back and forth all night with X holding a slim one goal lead with under a minute to play. Making matters tougher, X was down a player due to a penalty with a face off deep in the defensive zone. They won the draw and fired the puck out of the zone with Nate Han giving chase. Starting from his own goal line, Han outraced every player in the rink, retrieved the puck and fed it to a hustling Malachi Henry who buried it for the game winner.
Saturday was about senior Joe Bauer who was playing in his last game as a Musketeer. Bauer, an Academic All American, completed his studies early and will graduate at the end of the semester. Joe had been in a prolonged goal scoring slump but he managed to breakout in his final game scoring a key goal for X. Another back and forth game saw X lead by 3 - 1 mid way through the second period only to find themselves down 3-4 at the end of two periods. X came roaring out for the final period, outscoring the Cardinals 5 - 0 and posted an 8 - 4 win. Max Poe was stellar in the third period and allowed no goals.
The Muskies head into the break with an 8-3-1 record with a very difficult second semester schedule ahead. Coach Driscoll commented "The break is a blessing and curse. We have a lot of injured players who could use the rest but we are playing at a high level right now so you hate to give up the momentum." Assistant Coach Sperrick said, "if they can come back with the same effort we had late in the semester, we should have a lot of fun in January and February."
