Leading International Expert on Contemporary Islam to Speak

On Friday, Oct. 21, the public is invited to a free lecture by Pakistani Ambassador Akbar Ahmed, who will explore the contemporary issues facing Muslims in America – our fastest growing religious group. He will also shed light on extremist Islamic groups and the reality of their influence in national and global politics. He will speak at 4:00 pm in Kennedy Auditorium of Xavier’s Conaton Learning Commons at the corner of Dana and Ledgewood Avenues. Ambassador Ahmed has been called “the world’s leading authority on contemporary Islam” by the BBC, and is a frequent commentator on CNN. He is professor of Islamic Studies at American University in Washington after having taught at Princeton, Harvard, and Cambridge Universities and serving as Ambassador of Pakistan to Great Britain. In 2008-2009 he toured the United States and conducted a study of American society through the experiences of the Muslim community. His recent book, Journey Into America: The Challenge of Islam, contains the findings.
