Blessing Celebration Set for Friday for Xavier"s New Residence and Dining Complex

| May 2, 2010

The site for the new Residence Hall and Dining Complex on the Xavier University campus will be blessed in a ceremony presided over by President Michael J. Graham, S.J. on Friday, May 7.

The blessing ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. and will conclude by approximately 1:00 p.m. A ceremony will be held on the campus greenspace near Bellarmine Chapel at Ledgewood and Herald Avenues with the actual blessing taking place on a cleared area on the actual construction site.

The complex will house approximately 535 students in suite-style living in four connected buildings. The new dining facility will have a seating capacity of up to 800 and will replace the current Hoff Marketplace dining hall in the Cintas Center. The new dining hall will retain the Hoff name which is in honor of the late James E. Hoff, S.J., former Xavier president.

The new complex, totaling 240,000 square feet, will be ready for occupancy in the fall of 2011, which means students starting as freshmen next fall may move in to the new building for their sophomore year as the complex is being designed primarily for sophomore housing.

Locating the complex near the Gallagher Student Center, the existing residence halls and Bellarmine Chapel is expected to bring more energy and vibrancy to the core of campus while also unifying the rest of campus.

The project began with the removal of four houses at the corner of Ledgewood and Herald Avenues. Offices in those buildings were relocated to other spaces on campus. To help finance the construction, Xavier issued approximately $48 million in tax exempt bonds in January, 2010 through the State of Ohio Higher Educational Facility Commission.
