The Xavier University equestrian team returned from Morehead State University last month with another championship ribbon to add to its collection.
For the second time in four horse shows this season, Ellen Davis of Chicago was the champion rider, beating competitors from the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, University of Cincinnati, Midway College, Marshall University, Northern Kentucky University and Morehead State. Davis earned three blue ribbons in four events at the horse show that took place Nov. 21-22 at Morehead State and won the individual championship. She placed third in her other class.
The show was hosted by Morehead State and was sanctioned by the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. Competing at Morehead's equestrian center, the Xavier team also earned a first and a second place from Jenny Warner, a freshman from Hebron, Ky. Alex Calvert, a freshman from Troy, Ohio, won a second and third place. Briana LeCompte, a freshman from Cleves, Ohio, and Alicia Dean, a sophomore from Gahanna, Ohio, each scored fifth and sixth places.
The Xavier equestrian team trains at Beckett Run Farm north of Cincinnati with coaches Gwen and Jim Arrigon, who formerly coached at Miami University of Ohio. A relatively new team, Xavier has enough members to fill only half the team events but still placed fourth among eight teams, topping Louisville and Cincinnati among others.
The equestrian team returns to competition in February hoping to qualify riders for the May 2010 collegiate National Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky.
