University commemorates 1958 NIT Championship team at halftime on Feb. 10

Members of the team who will be in attendance include Joe Viviano and Hank Stein | February 4, 2008

When the Musketeers take the court on Sunday, Feb. 10, against St. Joe's at the Cintas Center, they'll be wearing throwback uniforms to replicate the look of the 1958 NIT Championship team. During a special halftime ceremony, members and coaches of the 1958 team will receive a jersey and a watch to commemorate their amazing victory.

Xavier won its only national championship in 1958 when the NIT rivaled the NCAA Tournament for postseason supremacy. The Musketeers, playing under first-year coach Jim McCafferty, started the season 10-1, but fell into a deep funk heading into postseason play. Seeded last in the NIT field, Xavier defeated Niagara, Bradley and St. Bonaventure to reach the championship game. Led by tournament MVP Hank Stein, Xavier knocked off heavily favored Dayton in overtime in Madison Square Garden to complete what Sport magazine called "one of the greatest upsets in basketball history."

Joe Viviano, player and All-Tournament Team
