Xavier University students will have a new place to grab that morning cup of Joe when they return to campus on Monday, January 14. Coffee Emporium, Cincinnati’s oldest locally owned coffee company, is opening up shop on the first level of the Gallagher Student Center (GSC).
“We were honored when Xavier approached us to bring our coffee retail operation to their Student Center. We're especially excited to work with the Xavier students and their entrepreneurial studies program to help develop small business skills for interested students. I believe the students and staff will really appreciate Coffee Emporium’s variety of offerings for both coffee and non-coffee drink lovers,” said Ton Tausch of Coffee Emporium.
Xavier students will be employed as staff and managers. Senior student managers will not only gain experience about the coffee business; they will have an opportunity to accompany Coffee Emporium to a Costa Rican coffee plantation.
“When the plan for Coffee Emporium was reported and discussed during the weekly Student Senate business meetings, the students were very excited,” said Assistant Director of Student Involvement J.B. Bailey. “They really embraced the organization, the management, as well as the educational opportunity that the Coffee Emporium will provide students.”
Coffee Emporium is the second locally owned business to move to the Xavier campus. In March 2007, the Blue Gibbon restaurant, the popular, family-owned Chinese eatery, opened its first-ever franchise on the lower lever of GSC.
“We are very excited about the expanded services Coffee Emporium will bring to our campus. This family owned company fits very well into our mission to support local communities and businesses. Their notoriety of being ‘The Best of Cincinnati’ adds to our nationally recognized campus quality and service excellence,” Director for Auxiliary Services Tom Barlow said.
Over the past few years, Barlow has been transforming GSC’s food options. Subway opened in 2006 and Ryan’s Sports Pub recently updated its menu, added big screen TV and hosts men’s basketball coach Sean Miller’s weekly radio show.
