Antonio Johnson Scholarship Gala Celebrates 31 Years

Unforgettable: A Message of Hope and Perseverance | April 12, 2007

On Friday, March 23, The Black Student Association and the Office of Multicultural Affairs presented the 31st Annual Antonio Johnson Scholarship Gala. Each year, a junior who excels in areas of academic excellence, community service, leadership, and involvement in the Black Student Association is awarded a full scholarship for their senior year at Xavier. A runner-up is also awarded a scholarship of $10,000, provided by FACS Group, Inc. The formal event was a great success thanks to the entirely student-run Planning Committee, headed by co-chairs Alexis McConnell and Aaron Parker. With over 430 in attendance, it was declared by many to be “the best yet.” This year’s theme, “Unforgettable,” honored the legacy left by Antonio Johnson and carried on by the hard work and dedication of the Black Student Association. It was a privilege and an honor to welcome keynote speaker Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones of Cleveland’s 11th District, whose exciting and stirring address reminded the audience to make the most of what life has to offer, and to always remember one’s humble beginnings. This year’s deserving scholarship winner was Ms. Keyona Gullett, and the runner-up was Mr. Adeleke Oni. Congratulations to these outstanding individuals and to all who helped to make this year’s Gala truly “Unforgettable!”
