Students, staff, alumni and friends are gathering at the Cintas Center at 8:00 a.m. to get their assignments for the day. Volunteers are expected to arrive at area schools and community agencies at around 9:30 a.m. and work until about 2:00 p.m. or until the project is finished.
Each site has a team captain who is responsible for assessing the school’s or agency’s needs, informing Home Depot of the materials required, and coordinating a team of volunteers on the day of the event. Continental breakfast and pizza for lunch are provided for all volunteers.
Paint is provided by Glidden Paint and Home Depot provides everything else, from rollers, pans, tape and ladders to t-shirts and just about anything a school or agency asks for to build bookcases, paint a locker room and more.
The Crosstown Helpout has grown from 200 volunteers the first year into one of the biggest volunteer events in the Greater Cincinnati area. As the name implies, the event is a take-off on the Crosstown Shootout basketball game between the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University. Alumni, staff and volunteers from both the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University communities jointly plan the event.
All participants are eligible to win valuable prizes. One of the top prizes every year has been a pair of tickets to the following year’s Crosstown Shootout basketball game.
Some of the locations where volunteers are helping include Annunciation School, Burton Elementary School, Drop Inn Center, First Step Home, Madisonville Recreation Center, Our Daily Bread, Norwood City Schools, Working in Neighborhoods and YMCA House of Peace.
The Crosstown Helpout is sponsored by the Xavier University National Alumni Association, the University of Cincinnati Alumni Association and Home Depot. It is also sponsored by Glidden Paint, Coca-Cola, Domino’s Pizza, Home City Ice and Skyline Chili.
