“Xavier Nation” is the first in a line of annual collectible t-shirts, which are known as the "X shirt." Proceeds from the sale of the shirt, which was introduced by Xavier officials and X-treme Fans, benefit Matthew 25: Ministries.
“The idea behind The X Shirt is to bring all of the Xavier community under one umbrella through one unifying shirt,” explains Mark Gazdik, assistant director of marketing for the department of athletics.
The front sports the words “Xavier Nation.” The back includes a photo of one of Xavier’s first basketball teams with the words “Generations of Excellence.” The X Shirt logo, which will appear somewhere on each year’s shirt, is also on the back. This year’s shirt was designed by a team of campus representatives and students, including members of the student alumni association and X-treme Fans.
“Starting this fall, we’ll form a committee of students that will oversee the selection of the theme, solicit and select shirt design ideas from the student body, and select the charity that will benefit from the sales,” says Gazdik.
The project is similar to one at Notre Dame. Notre Dame began ‘The Shirt Project’ in 1990. It is now the school’s largest student-run fundraiser and has raised more than $4 million dollars.
The X shirt is 100 percent cotton, printed by Jansport and comes in sizes S-XXL. The cost is $15. The shirt is available at the Xavier bookstore located in the Gallagher Student Center, via the web at Xavier's online bookstore or by calling 513 745-3311.
