McCafferty, 90, died Sept. 18, in Seattle. He suffered a broken hip at his home in Cincinnati in January of this year. After surgery, McCafferty moved to Seattle to be near his daughter and her family.
Known as "Big Jim" by his friends, McCafferty coached the Musketeers to the 1958 National Invitation Tournament Championship, the first major national basketball championship by any university in Ohio. Under McCafferty, Xavier also earned its first NCAA tournament berth in 1962. He served as the University’s athletic director from 1962 to July 1979 and also served as assistant vice president of student development.
