Weekend packed with sports events as seasons begin and end

Men's, women's basketball teams open season, volleyball team in A-10 Tournament | November 21, 2005

This past weekend was filled with significant sporting events as both the men's and women's basketball teams opened the season, the volleyball team competed in the A-10 tournament, and the University unveiled the P. Douglas O'Keefe Athletic Hall of Fame and inducted three new members.

The impressive 2005 induction class included former golfer Steve Dixon ('99), former standout basketball player Joe Geiger ('64) and volleyball star Beth Osterday ('97). The trio brought Xavier's total number of inductees to 93 for its hall of fame, which was chartered in 1980.

The men's basketball team started strong as Brian Thornton had game-highs of 20 points and nine rebounds as Xavier picked up a 45-point win over Eastern Ilinois, 80-35, in the season opener at the Cintas Center. The Musketeers have now won 16 straight regular season openers.

Junior guard Suntana Granderson led three Musketeers in double-figures with 20 points but it was not enough as the women's basketball team dropped a 93-68 decision to No. 14 Maryland on Sunday afternoon in College Park. With the loss, the team evens up at 1-1 on the year while the Terps improve to 2-0.

In the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament hosted by the University of Rhode Island, third-seeded Xavier volleyball team fell to second-seeded Temple 3-1. The Musketeers were defeated by scores of 22-30, 30-14, 30-20 and 30-27. Xavier falls to 19-11 on the season.
