University spared from chemical leak

Leak closes schools and businesses surrounding regional airport | August 29, 2005

Cincinnati officials are closely monitoring a chemical leak on Cincinnati’s east side that closed three schools, shut down area roads and forced a mandatory evacuation of residents and businesses in an area near Lunken Airport, which is about five miles east of Xavier's campus. The University community is not threatened by the leak and no evacuation of campus is planned.

According to local news reports, a 21,000 to 22,000-gallon railroad tank car started leaking styrene gas about 6:00 p.m. Sunday and again this morning. The leaking tanker belongs to the Westlake Styrene Co., of Sulfur, La.  Officials from the Federal Railroad Administration are expected to be in Cincinnati tonight to start an investigation.
