Lectures highlight week's activities

African-American issues focus on talks, while 15th anniversary of Ignatian programs also celebrated | February 24, 2003

As February winds down this week, the campus is scheduled to host a plethora of guest speakers and discussion groups. On Wednesday, Feb. 26, the University’s Ignatian programs is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a gathering at 11:30 a.m. in the Clock Tower Lounge in the Gallagher Student Center. Also on Wednesday, Sigma Gamma Rho honors its founders with the event "Our Legacy: Those Before Us." It honors the seven African-American women who started the sorority and acknowledges the importance of African Americans who paved the way for today’s leaders. The event starts at 7:22 p.m. and takes place in Kelley Auditorium in Alter Hall. On Thursday, Feb. 27, the film and discussion series on "Racism and Reconciliation" concludes with an interfaith worship gathering at 7:00 p.m. at Bellarmine Chapel. Also on Thursday, Dan Flynn, executive director of Accuracy in Academia, is speaking on campus at 7:30 p.m. in Alter Hall, Room 103. He is the author of Why the Left Hates America and is talking about the irrationality of anti-Americanism. The College Republicans, The Leadership Institute and Xavier Student For America are sponsoring the event. And, Sharon Dean from the University of Cincinnati will speak on Thursday on Eliza Potter, a 19th century African-American, who wrote an autobiography about her life in Cincinnati. The lecture is titled, "Nonetheless Truthful, Nonetheless Strange: A Black Hairdresser's Experience of Cincinnati's Highlife." The talk, which is sponsored by women's and minorities' studies program, is in the Cintas Center conference center at 4:00 p.m. For more information, contact Christine Anderson at 513 745-4246.
