Junior competes for Ohio Society of CPAs Scholarship

Sarah Heitker selected as Cincinnati regional finalist based on application and interview | June 1, 2005

Junior accounting major Sarah (Mindy) Heitker is this year’s winner of the Ohio Society of CPAs statewide scholarship competition. Heitker, who is from Westerville, Ohio, was one of seven regional winners who competed for the scholarship.

The Ohio Society of CPAs chapter scholarship program is open to students who are already majoring in accounting. Heitker was selected as the Cincinnati regional finalist based on her application.

In a “The Apprentice”-type format, Heitker answered questions relative to accounting and ethics before a panel of six judges. The judges also interviewed her individually.

Heitker received $1,000 for winning the regional competition and $3,000 for winning the statewide competition for a total of $4,000.

“It was such an honor to be invited to this competition,” says Heitker. “Even if I had not won, the experience was invaluable. The judges offered worthwhile insights and gave me some new perspectives on the accounting profession.”

“My department is so pleased with Mindy’s accomplishments,” says Ed VanDerbeck, chair of Xavier’s department of accountancy. “Not only because she is an exceptional student, but also a very giving person who participates in community service and tutoring activities.”

Heitker, who will be a senior this fall, is also chair of Xavier’s Relay For Life, which raises money for the American Cancer Society. This year the event raised more than $26,000.
