Team takes seventh place trophy at the Chick-fil-A Cheer and Dance Collegiate Championship in Daytona, Fla. | April 22, 2005

The Xavier University dance team competed in its first national level competition at the Chick-fil-A Cheer and Dance Collegiate Championship April 6-10 in Daytona, Fla. The 12-member squad competed against 17 other squads from across the nation and took home the seventh place trophy.

“We did very well at nationals, considering it was our first time there,” says Julie Rostron, a Xavier senior and dance team captain. “It was really helpful for us to be able to watch the finals and see what other teams are doing. We had a blast and plan on making it much further in the competition next year.”

The team’s routine incorporated hip hop, jazz and pom dance moves.

Throughout the school year, the team performed at several basketball games, including the Crosstown Shootout where they performed with the University of Cincinnati dance team. They also performed at high schools, nursing homes, orphanages and other locations around the Tri-state.

The team practices three nights a week throughout the school year and is coached by Steve Chapla, 29. Chapla, a former University of Cincinnati cheerleader, has directed the squad for three years.
