While everyone else was sleeping in on Feb. 1, more than 750 alumni from Xavier and the University of Cincinnati got up early to participate in the Crosstown Helpout. This years event had a record number of volunteers and served 39 schools and agenciessuch as the Drop Inn Center, Bond Hill Academy, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Pleasant Hill School and Cincinnati Riding for the Handicapped.
Weve gotten really positive feedback, says Mary Ann Schomaker, assistant director of alumni programs. Every year the event grows. More and more people return each year to do it. Its really grown for both schools.
After a quick breakfast and prayer in the Cintas Center, the group of volunteers dispersed to paint, repair or clean up an assigned site. Since this years Crosstown Helpout fell on the same day as a UC basketball game, the alumni association didnt hold the usual after-event party. Instead, a prize patrol of four cars drove to 10 sites each and handed out prizes that ranged from pizza gift certificates to a two-night stay at the Four Points Sheraton hotel.
