The team is competing against 17 other squads from across the nation. Their routine incorporates hip hop, jazz and pom dance moves.
“I just love dancing and performing,” says Ashley Grecco, junior marketing major and team co-captain. “It’s a rush to perform in front of 10,000 people.”
The team has performed at several basketball games, including the Crosstown Shootout where they performed with the University of Cincinnati dance team, which was also a first. They’ve also performed at high schools, nursing homes, orphanages and other locations around the Tri-state.
The team practices three nights a week throughout the school year and is coached by Steve Chapla. Chapla, a former University of Cincinnati cheerleader, has directed the squad for three years.
“After the first round, only 10 of the 17 teams will be chosen to move on to the finals,” Chapla explains.
In preparation for the national competition, the dance team competed in a regional event in Columbus last month and came home with second place.
