With degrees from Harvard and the University of Cincinnati, Nuñez has compiled an admirable record of service and experience. She is currently director of affirmative action and multicultural affairs at Northern Kentucky University.
"I am struck by Ms. Nuñez’s easy, gracious style, clear sense of priorities and passion for being an agent of institutional change,” said Graham. “I believe that she will be a significant asset to Xavier University as we move forward and, personally, very much look forward to working with her to further the University’s goals regarding diversity and inclusion.”
Nuñez’s position is one part of a much larger institutional commitment to advancing issues of diversity and inclusion at Xavier University. In other areas:
- Members of the Gender Diversity Studies Committee are reviewing the curricular diversity requirement, E Pluribus Unum, with an eye toward making a diversity component of the core more robust and effective.
- A variety of strategies has increased the number of minority students and faculty steadily over the last several years.
- Later this semester, initial training programs with respect to diversity and inclusion will be launched designed by the University's diversity consultant, Global Lead, and the diversity advisory committee, chaired by the College of Arts and Sciences dean Janice Walker.
- The work of the Community Building Collaborative at Xavier, directed by Byron White, has become more strategic and focused.
These initiatives and many more flow ultimately from the academic vision statement authored by Xavier faculty and the document’s ringing call for renewing and revitalizing Xavier University’s commitment to diversity. That vision reflects and affirms the overarching Jesuit identity, one of whose markers is to “foster human diversity and inclusiveness.”
