Men's, women's basketball teams win over weekend

It was a highly successful weekend for the Xavier basketball teams, as the No. 20-ranked men's team downed Ball State, 87-58 on Friday night at the Cintas Center. Then, on Saturday, Reetta Piipari became the career record holder for assists as No. 31 Xavier beat the University of Pittsburgh, 82-65. Teammate Tara Boothe was also named Atlantic 10 Conference rookie of the week over the weekend. This is the second straight week she's won the award.
For the fourth time in the last five years, the women's team has opened the season by winning seven of its first eight games. Amy Waugh led the Musketeers with 22 in the game. Alexis Henderson added 14 and Boothe scored 13.
The women's team has the week off before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 28 when they head across town to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats.
All-American David West scored a season high 24 points to lead the men's team. The team is now 6-2 on the season and plays again tonight, Monday, Dec. 23, in Albany, N.Y., against Siena College at 7:00 p.m. The Saints are 5-2 on the season.
Xavier's men's team returns to the Cintas Center on Saturday, Dec. 28, to play Eastern Kentucky at 7:30 p.m.
