In many ways, David C. Flaspohler exemplifies the Xavier University family. Devoted both to the University as an institution and to those who work and learn here, Flaspohler has, during the course of his combined 45 years here as a student and instructor, immersed himself deeply in the life of all that is Xavier.
A Cincinnati native, Flaspohler received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Xavier in 1961 then earned his master’s degree from the University in 1962. He then went on to Rutgers University, where he received his doctorate in statistics in 1971. He began teaching at Xavier in 1962, then spent 1969 to 1970 teaching at Montclair State College before moving on to teach for a year at Clemson University. He returned to Xavier in 1971 and became a full professor in 1975.
During his career at the University, Flaspohler has been called on to fill a number of roles, including chair of the department of mathematics and computer science; dean of the graduate school; acting registrar; interim director for admission; director of institutional research, records and registration; and associate academic vice president for enrollment services. He also chaired the steering committee for the University’s North Central Reaccreditation. Since 1999, he has served as the director for the University’s center for excellence in education.
Active outside the University as well, Flaspohler has published and presented in a wide range of venues. From 1980 to 2004, he authored or coauthored numerous proposals that led to more than $3 million in grants and contracts for professional development for teachers of kindergarten through grade 12. He is a member of the Mathematical Association of America, Phi Mu Epsilon, the American Statistical Association, the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Greater Cincinnati Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
In recognition of his dedication and long service, Xavier University was proud to present David C. Flaspohler with the Paul L. O'Connor Leadership Award.
