The team staged a remarkable comeback against UMass, going on an 18-0 run with 8:17 left in the game to erase a 14-point deficit and regain the lead. The run was sparked by six points from Aida Sarajlija, who finished with nine points in the game. Freshman Chelsea Chowning scored a career high 15 points to lead Xavier, while Nikki Wells added eight points to go with six rebounds.
The game against Rhode Island wasn't as dramatic, as the Musketeers grabbed the lead early and never looked back, but had its moments of drama. The lead grew to 21 points early in the second half, but the Rams slowly cut it to single digits. Xavier made its free throws, though, to hold on to the win, making 25 of 31 in the game.
Tara Boothe led Xavier with 19 points. Wallner added nine points and Sarajlija finished with eight. Freshman Miranda Green also tallied nine points, including five free throws in the final minute and a half.
The team is now 12-7 overall this season and evens its record in the Atlantic 10 Conference to 4-4. It plays at Dayton on Friday, Jan. 30. at 7 p.m.
The men's basketball team didn't do as well, losing at home to the University of Richmond, 53-44, on Sunday. The team once again struggled with its shooting, making just 21 percent of its shots. The 21 percent shooting and its 44 points both rank as its lowest of the season and the shooting percentage is the lowest on record over the last 30 seasons.
Senior Romain Sato, who went just four-for-13 from the field, led the team with 11 points. He also pulled down a team-high nine boards. Freshman Justin Doellman contributed 10 points.
The Spiders are the first opponent to win two games over Xavier at Cintas. The loss also marks the first time in four seasons that Xavier has lost two games at the Cintas Center.
The Musketeers fall to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in A-10 play. They head to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Jan. 28, to play George Washington University at 7:30 p.m. The game is broadcast on 55WKRC-AM and Fox SportsNet Ohio.
Also over the weekend, the women's tennis team cruised past the University of Akron, 7-0 on Friday. The team, which is undefeated this season at 4-0, had its match at Ohio State University on Sunday postponed because of the weather.
The men's tennis team took on Ohio State on Friday, losing to the No. 17-ranked Buckeyes, 7-0. The team is now 3-1 on the season.
The rifle team won for the seventh time in eight head-to-head matches, beating the University of Kentucky on Saturday.
The men's and women's swim teams were also in action over the weekend and set four pool records in the final home meet of the season. Unfortunately, the teams were swept by visiting Wright State University.
