Across the country, Xavier University and University of Cincinnati fans and alumni are gathering Saturday, Dec. 7, to cheer on their basketball teams during the annual Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout. This years rival game is being held at UCs Shoemaker Center starting at 4:00 p.m.
Xavier and UC alumni are convening in over 26 cities to celebrate the rivalry. Kevin Garry, director for Xavier alumni chapters, came up with the idea to host shootout reunions last year.
This idea grew out of a desire to present an opportunity for the fans of both schools who are living away from Cincinnati to gather together for fun and rivalry while rooting for their alma maters, says Garry.
Dayton alumni from both schools got started with a Crosstown Blood Drive held from Nov. 30 through Dec.5. The blood drive was sponsored by alumni chapters from both universities in addition to St. Albert the Great Parish and the Dayton Community Blood Center. According to Mike Madges, Xaviers Dayton alumni president, the event offered alumni the chance to show their Musketeer pride and make a genuine gift to the greater Dayton area.
In addition, the Las Vegas alumni chapter hosts its annual Crosstown Shootout Golf Tournament at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 7. The tournament takes place at the Angel Park Golf Club in Las Vegas as alumni from Xavier and UC swing their clubs on the Cloud Nine par three course for prizes. After the tournament, the rival alumni follow a play-by-play of the game at Roadrunner Saloon.
Also, alumni chapters around the nation host their own events to support the Musketeers. In particular, the Detroit and Minnesota chapters congregate for Mass in their regions and then join other alumni in cheering on the Musketeers at a local eatery. For more information on a particular chapter, call the national alumni association or visit the calendar web site.
Current students have collaborative events on behalf of the schools. The annual Crosstown Helpout expects over 600 students, alumni and friends to provide various renovating services for over 30 schools and local social agencies collectively. In addition, X-treme fans, a spirit club on campus, invites current Xavier students to watch the game with their peers in the OConnor Sports Center at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
