The festivities include the 10th annual homecoming parade at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The parade features more than 100 entries, including student floats, high school bands and local celebrities. Staging for the parade is taking place at the Cintas Center. The parade is beginning near the corner of Pacific and Herald avenues near the Cintas Center. It is proceeding down Herald Avenue to Ledgewood, right on Dana Avenue, and right on Victory Parkway, ending at the corner of Victory Parkway and Ledgewood.
The 19th annual All For One Classic 5K Race precedes the parade. The race route winds through Xaviers campus and the streets of Cincinnati, beginning and ending at the front entrance of the Cintas Center. Race proceeds benefit Xaviers cross-country team. Registration is required. Call 513 745-3727 for more information.
Another popular feature of this years homecoming celebration is the homecoming court. The homecoming committee is selecting a court and naming a homecoming king and queen. The king and queen selection is being based in part on a penny war. Students are donating pennies to the candidates of their choice, and the proceeds are being donated to a charity selected by the candidates. The winners are being announced at the student homecoming dance.
This year homecoming coincides with the 2003 Black Coaches Association (BCA) Classic mens college basketball tournament. Xavier is hosting the eight-team tournament from Nov. 15-17 at the Cintas Center, with four games being played each day. The homecoming game is being played Saturday evening.
This is the first men's basketball tournament Xavier has hosted at the Cintas Center, which opened for the 2000-2001 school year. Xavier has sold out 39 of its 43 regular season men's basketball games in the arena's history.
We are very excited to be hosting one of the countrys premier preseason tournaments, basketball Head Coach Thad Matta says. Playing against solid competition from around the country so early in the season will be a great experience for our program. In addition to Xavier, the event features San Diego (NCAA) and Illinois-Chicago (NIT). Rounding out the field are intrastate rival Ohio, UC Irvine, Mercer, Oakland and Coppin State.
