Men's golf in 10th place at Xavier Provident Invitational

Freshman John Streibich earns second A-10 honor, leads team into tournament's second day | October 14, 2003

New 36-hole individual and team records were set as the Xavier men’s golf team finished day one in 10th place at its own Xavier Provident Invitational at the Golf Center at Paramount's Kings Island.

Freshman John Streibich, who on Monday earned his second Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award of this season, leads the Musketeers with a 1-under 141 after shooting a 69 in Monday afternoon’s second round. He is tied for 16th heading into Tuesday’s final round.

As a team, Xavier posted rounds of 290 and 285, for a total score of 575 that places them 10th, but within five shots of fourth place.

Indiana University holds the overall lead, shooting rounds of 283 and 277 on Monday for an overall score of 8-under 560. That tally is a new tournament record, eclipsing the old mark of 562 that was shot by Western Kentucky University in 2001.

Indiana’s Jeff Overton, who has won all three tournaments he has played in this fall, holds the individual lead at 12-under 130 after shooting a pair of 65s on Monday. His score is also a tournament record, besting the old mark of 133 that Xavier’s Miles Maillet set in 2002.

Marquette University stands in second place with a score of 561. Marquette was bolstered in the morning by a tournament record tying round of 63 by freshman Michael Bielawski.

Bowling Green State University is third at 563. The Falcons equaled a tournament record in the morning round with a 276, but cooled off with a 287 in the afternoon.

Junior Neal Grusczynski shot a 2-over 144 for Xavier to tie for 32nd after Monday’s play. Freshman Jason Kokrak is tied for 42nd with a 145. Andy Pope is tied for 50th with a 147, and Maillet is tied for 66th with a 149.

Xavier’s “B-Team,” XU Blue, is in 14th place after two rounds, posting a total score of 582 Monday. Blue-team member Justin Fender is the low-man for all Xavier golfers, shooting a 2-under 140 to be tied for 12th after he carded a 66 on Monday afternoon.

Kenton Hobbs is tied for 32nd at 2-over 144. Senior Matt Makinson is tied for 55th with a 148. Jon Friess is tied for 102nd with a score of 155, and Patrick Baxter is in 112th place with a 162.

Xavier also has two individuals in the tournament. Brandon Graspointner is tied for 32nd at 2-over 144, and David Noe is tied for 90th with a 153.
