Xavier scores big this weekend

Men's and women's basketball teams lead the way with wins | November 25, 2002

The Kevin McGuff era began on a winning note as the new women's basketball coach led his team to a season-opening 62-54 win over Pepperdine University over the weekend. Freshman Tara Boothe, playing in her first college game, scored 19 points to lead Xavier. Reetta Piipari added 16 points and Amy Waugh 10 points. The women play again on Friday, Nov. 29, against Louisiana Monroe at 7:00 p.m. in the Cintas Center. The men's basketball team rebounded from its loss to Stanford by beating Florida A&M, 93-64. Five Xavier players scored in double figures, led by All-American David West with 19. The team's next game is Tuesday, Dec. 3 at home against Purdue University. The volleyball team was unable to defend its Atlantic 10 Tournament title, losing to Temple in the championship semifinals on Friday in the Cintas Center. The team, which has a 16-14 season record, concludes its season on Nov. 29-30 in the Atlantic 10/Conference USA Challenge in Dayton, Ohio, against Louisville and Cincinnati. The swimming teams split their weekend matches, each beating Valparaiso on Saturday, before losing to Miami University on Sunday.
