California alumni hosting women's soccer team

Team, grads gather for barbecue during one of many upcoming alumni events | September 19, 2003

Students aren’t the only Musketeers getting back to school this fall—alumni across the country are also getting back in touch with their Xavier days in a variety of alumni chapter events.

Saturday, Sept. 20, California’s alumni chapters are joining forces at a barbecue to support the Xavier women’s soccer team, which is in the area for the weekend to battle Pepperdine University on Sept. 19 and the University of California at Santa Barbara on Sept. 21. The soccer players are the guests of honor at the open house event, during which members of the Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego and San Francisco chapters are bringing their families and meeting the team at the Santa Monica home of 1968 alum Paul Dwyer and his wife, Barbara. Beginning at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, the Musketeers and their families are enjoying a variety of games and sports, as well as the chance to take a swim in the ocean. At 4:30 p.m., appetizers and refreshments are being served, followed by a barbeque dinner and dessert at 5:30 p.m. The soccer team has to hit the road at 7:30 p.m., but alumni and their families are welcome to stay and mingle until 9:00 p.m. For more information, call Dwyer at 310 459-5460 or e-mail pauldwyeresq@aol.com.

Sunday, Sept. 21, alumni in the Philadelphia area are gathering at Veteran’s Stadium at 1:35 p.m. to take in a late-season Major League Baseball game between the Phillies and the Reds. Thursday, Sept. 25, the Orlando Chapter presents “A Flavorful Event,” a special dining and learning experience in which alumni are treated to a cooking demonstration by the local Timpano Grill’s executive chef Will Ratley—and have the chance to slice it and dice it right along with him. Participants are not only being taught to cook a meal, but are able to dig in and share it all once it’s prepared. Presented by Jim Donlin, Class of 1977, and the Westye Group, the event will be held at Orlando’s Wolf Culinary School from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. For more information, e-mail orlando@xu.edu.

Thursday, Oct. 9, all Xavier 1940s alumni, wherever they are, are invited to congregate back on campus for a special alumni luncheon for the classes of 1940-1949. Held in the Cintas Center’s Schiff Family Conference Center at noon, the event features a hot buffet lunch and a presentation by featured speaker Jim McCoy, associate vice president for enrollment management at Xavier and 1978 graduate. Alumni can hear all about recent projects and progress at Xavier while renewing college friendships and trading stories of their alma mater. Cost is $15 per person, and reservations must be made by Sept. 26. Sunday, Oct. 12, the San Francisco alumni chapter is taking in a matinee at the opera, attending the San Francisco Opera’s performance of “The Barber of Seville.” The performance begins at 2:00 p.m. For more information, e-mail alumni@xu.edu or call toll-free 800 344-4698.
