Athletic hall of fame induction kicks off homecoming
Weeklong event includes dance, parade, race and athletic games | November 14, 2002
Former mens basketball coach Pete Gillen, along with All-American and Olympic rifle star Jason Parker and basketball and volleyball standout Karen Ohe Jagers, are being inducted into the athletic hall of fame on Friday, Nov 15, in the Cintas Center at 6:00 p.m. The induction banquet is part of the homecoming 2002 festivities that continue through the next week.
Gillen, a four-time Midwestern Collegiate Conference Coach-of-the-Year, piled up a long list of successes during his time at the University, most notably leading the Musketeers to postseason play eight times in his nine seasons.
Parker, a member of the rifle team, earned seven All-American citations during his four years shooting for the University. The 1996 graduate is now a member of the U.S. Army marksmanship unit and was a member of the 1998 Munich World Cup Air Rifle Championship Team. He also participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Jagers lettered four years in basketball and two years in volleyball. The 1983 graduate pulled down 873 rebounds during her four-year career for an average of 7.9 rebounds per game. She also played two years of volleyball as a hitter, helping the team to a school record 29-9 season her sophomore year.

Several other homecoming events are filling up the campus calendar. Tonight, Thursday, Nov. 14, the Xavier Players theater group begins a series of performances of the musical Footloose. Tonights performance starts at 8:00 p.m. in the Gallagher Center Theater. The show runs through Sunday, Nov. 24. For ticket information, call 513 745-3205.
A buffet-style pancake breakfast is being served up at OConnor Sports Center on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 9:30 a.m. Activities and entertainment for children are provided. Admission is free but reservations are required.
The homecoming parade is on Saturday as well, starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Cintas Center. Entries include area high school bands, student floats and local celebrities. Viewing is available along Victory Parkway and Ledgewood, Herald and Dana avenues.
Xavier opera students offer a lunchtime musical feast on Saturday as they perform arias, duets and ensembles while serving a three-course lunch. A cash bar is available, as are vegetarian options. Cost is $20 for adults and $15 for children age 12 and under. Reservations are due by Friday, Nov. 22. Reserve a seat by calling 513 745-3959.
On Saturday night, the good times roll with the sounds of the 1950s and 60s at the "Let the Good Times Roll" dance at 8:00 p.m. in the Cintas Center. Local band Four on the Floor is providing the music, while WGRR disc jockey J.D. Hughes hosts the evening. Cost is $10 and reservations are required.
On Sunday, Nov. 24, the mens basketball team battles Florida A&M at 2:00 p.m. in the Cintas Center arena. The game features a special halftime show. Tickets are $13. Following the game is a party at 4:00 p.m. in the Cintas Center banquet room with snacks and a cash bar. Admission is free, but reservations are required.
