Toughest Big Man among other awards being garnered by basketball forward | November 11, 2002

Xavier University senior forward David West, a 2001-02 Associated Press Second Team All-American, is earning plenty of preseason national recognition. Now you can add preseason National Player of the Year honors from Basketball Times magazine. West, voted as the nation's "Toughest Big Man" in a recent ESPN.com survey of Division I coaches, has been named as a 2002-03 preseason First Team All-American by The Sporting News, Basketball News, ESPN's Dick Vitale and by Dick "Hoops" Weiss for Basketball Times magazine. He has been named to the Playboy All-American team for the second straight year. He is a preseason Wooden All-American and is a preseason candidate for both the Wooden and Naismith National Player of the Year awards. Basketball Times is also the latest publication to rank the Musketeers among the nation's elite. Xavier, ranked fifth by The Sporting News and 11th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll, is ninth in the Basketball Times preseason poll. The preseason Associated Press Poll and All-American team are due out on Monday. West, the two-time Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year, averaged 18.3 points (first on the team and fifth in the A-10), 9.8 rebounds (first in the A-10), 2.5 blocks (first in the A-10), 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals a game last season. Xavier finished 26-6 last season, equaling the second-highest win total for a season in school history. The Musketeers, ranked 22nd in the final 2001-02 Associated Press Poll, won the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season and tournament championships, while advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Xavier plays the second of its two exhibition games on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. against the One World All-Stars at 7:30 p.m. at Cintas Center.
