Men's, women's basketball teams preparing to play

The men's and women's basketball teams are preparing to begin their NCAA Tournament games this weekend. The men's team begins play today, Friday, March 21, against Troy State University at 7:25 p.m. EST in Nashville, Tenn. The women's team plays Sunday, March 23, against the University of California-Santa Barbara in Lubbock, Texas. The national alumni association is hosting pregame celebrations in Nashville before the men's games at the Nashville Mariott Hotel. On Friday, the celebration runs from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. and includes a complimentary buffet and cash bar, while Sunday's celebration runs from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and includes a complimentary brunch. Seating capacity for both events is limited. That marks the highest seed in school history. Xavier is 7-14 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including a trip to the second round last year. Should the Musketeers beat Troy State, which is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance, they would play the winner of the University of Maryland/University of North Carolina-Wilmington game in the second round on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. EST - two hours later than previously scheduled. No tickets for the NCAA Tournament will be sold to the general public through the Xavier ticket office. The team is garnering a great deal of attention after the U. S. Basketball Writers Association selected senior forward David West as winner of the Oscar Robertson Player of the Year Trophy on Tuesday, March 18. West averaged 20.3 points and 12 rebounds per game this season, while leading the University to the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season. West became the first player in University history to garner such an award. West was also recently honored as the National Most Valuable Player by and player of the year by ESPN's College Gamenight. He earned the Atlantic 10 Conference player of the year for the third straight year, marking the first time in league history anyone has won that award three times. He was also named First Team All-American by the USBWA, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and The women's team has never played Cal-Santa Barbara, which is ranked No. 17 in the national polls. The Gauchos won the Big West Conference for the seventh year in a row and have a 26-4 record overall. The winner takes on the winner of the game between Texas Tech and Southwest Missouri State. Xavier has a record of 20-9 overall and was 11-5 in the A-10. This will be the team's fifth overall NCAA Tournament appearance, where it is 4-4 overall.
