The U. S. Basketball Writers Association selected
senior forward David West as winner of the Oscar Robertson Player of the Year Trophy on Tuesday, March 18. West averaged 20.3 points and 12 rebounds per game this season, while leading the University to the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season championship and into the NCAA Tournament, where the team plays Friday, March 21, against Troy State University.
West became the first player in University history to garner such an award.
West was also recently honored as the National Most Valuable Player by collegeinsider.com and player of the year by ESPN's College Gamenight. He earned the Atlantic 10 Conference player of the year for the third straight year, marking the first time in league history anyone has won that award three times. He was also named First Team All-American by the USBWA, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and ESPN.com.
The Musketeers are 25-5 and the No. 3 seed in the South regional of the NCAA Tournament. That marks the highest seed in school history. Xavier is 7-14 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including a trip to the second round last year. Should the Musketeers beat Troy State, which is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance, they would play the winner of the University of Maryland/University of North Carolina-Wilmington game in the second round.
Tickets for the games at the Gaylord Entertainment Center are $50 per session. Call 615 770-2040 for more information or to order tickets. Season ticket holders should refer to information that has already been mailed to them regarding purchasing tickets through the University. No tickets for the NCAA Tournament will be sold to the general public through the Xavier ticket office.

The women's team takes on the University of California-Santa Barbara on Sunday, March 23, in Lubbock, Texas.
Xavier has never played Cal-Santa Barbara, which is ranked No. 17 in the national polls. The Gauchos won the Big West Conference for the seventh year in a row and have a 26-4 record overall. The winner takes on the winner of the game between Texas Tech and Southwest Missouri State.
Xavier has a record of 20-9 overall and was 11-5 in the A-10. This will be the teams fifth overall NCAA Tournament appearance, where it is 4-4 overall.
