Xavier University School of Nursing Receives $827K Grant for Cross-Collaborative Training

Xavier University has received a three-year Health Resources and Services Administration grant totaling $827,256 supporting development and implementation of an all-college interprofessional collaboration course and program. Part of the funding supports faculty travel to share what is developed so other institutions can emulate Xavier’s model.

Xavier’s School of Nursing will prepare advanced nursing education (ANE) students to be competent in technologically-supported interprofessional practice using high-definition technology to enhance collaboration among professions. Nursing faculty and colleagues from other health-related programs in the College of Social Sciences, Health, and Education (CSSHE), will teach students across the college after completing an intense faculty development curriculum in fall 2012. Students enrolled in Xavier’s Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Master of Health Services Administration, Master of Occupational Therapy, MEd in special education, Doctor of Psychology, Master of Clinical Mental Health Counseling/School Counseling, Associate in Radiologic Technology, Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Educational Leadership and Human Resource Development and Bachelor of Athletic Training will be enrolled in the program.

Nurses living throughout rural Ohio have earned an MSN from Xavier through high definition video conferencing since 2008. The technologically-supported interprofessional course will be taught in January 2013 to local and rural graduate students, building upon activities that have taken place since 2009 within CSSHE.

The award will help Xavier achieve three major goals: the development of interprofessional faculty for teaching students across CSSHE programs; the implementation of a collaborative, culturally responsive and respectful interprofessional curriculum within the CSSHE preparing students to teach, administer, and practice using evolving technologies; and, comprehensive evaluation and dissemination to share best practices with others. It is expected more than 150 students each year will participate, 50 of whom are nursing ANE and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students.

“The Affordable Care Act of 2010 means more access to care and increased opportunities to provide primary, secondary and tertiary preventive services in the community,” says Dr. Susan Schmidt, director of Xavier’s School of Nursing. “A health care workforce grounded in interprofessional collaboration will be best prepared to provide access to high quality, affordable health care services across settings. These professionals will break down the silos of fragmented care currently seen and provide safe quality care in the least expensive environment using futuristic technology. This project substantially benefits underserved populations, rural populations and serves health professional shortage areas.”
