First Year at Xavier University:
Jim Daughters is currently serving as the Interim Director of Bands at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, conductor of the Fillmore Wind Band, and Music Director of the Cincinnati Junior Youth Wind Ensemble at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Mr. Daughters is a graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he was a teaching assistant with the University Bands under the tutelage of Richard Clary, earning degrees in Instrumental Conducting and Music Education. Jim is currently a DMA candidate at UK. In 2014, Jim had the great fortune as being selected as one of nine conductors world-wide to conduct and work with members of the Berlin Philharmonic at the Conductor’s Lab in Aix en Provence, France.
During his tenure at Conner Middle School in Hebron, Kentucky, the ensembles received regional and national recognition presenting several highly acclaimed performances. The CMS Symphonic Band has performed concerts and clinics at the 2012 Music for All National Concert Band Festival, multiple Kentucky Music Educators Association State In-Service Conferences, the 2011 National Middle School Association Conference, University of Kentucky Middle School Band Invitational, and the University of Kentucky "Windfest." Other recent honors have included a National Wind Band Honors Mark of Excellence Award and an invitation/performance at the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C as part of the 2011 National Festival of States and the premiere performance of Foundry by composer John Mackey in 2011. The CMS Jazz Ensemble has performed at the 2012 Jazz Educators Network International Conference, the 2011 National Middle School Association Conference, and presented concerts with several renowned jazz artists and university jazz ensembles in the region, including the CCM Jazz Ensemble, NKU Jazz Ensemble, and UK Jazz Ensemble.
The Fillmore Wind Band, official namesake of native Cincinnatian Henry Fillmore, performed at the 2014 International Women’s Brass Conference, the 2013 Ohio Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference, performed with the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Wind Orchestra, and with other wind ensembles in the Greater Cincinnati area. In 2015, the group will be performing at the Kentucky Music Educators Association In-Service Conference.
Jim is a recipient of the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and was a semi-finalist for the Grammy Awards Foundation National Music Educator of the Year in 2013. He also received the Middle School Teacher of the Year Award from KMEA District 6, the Teacher Who Made a Difference Award from the University of Kentucky, the Teacher of the Year Award from Conner Middle School in 2013, and he is a Kentucky Colonel.
Mr. Daughters has been a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for honor band and marching band festivals in the region. He has been the lead arranger for the University of Kentucky "Wildcat" Marching Band and Western Illinois University Marching "Leathernecks," and his arrangements have been performed by high school and university bands across the United States. Mr. Daughters was the drum major for the University of Kentucky “Wildcat” Marching Band and was the head clinician for the Kentucky Drum Major and Leadership Camp in Lexington. His professional affiliations include KMEA, OMEA, NAfME, NBA, JEN and an honorary inductee into Kappa Kappa Psi.
