Michel Chikwanine, a political refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, will share his story of war, escape, and hope at Xavier University’s Cintas Center at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, as part of the University’s Africa Awareness Week. The address is free and open to the public.

The Xavier Women’s Chorus, under the direction of Linda Busarow, DMA, will premiere an arrangement of the National Anthem created for it. The chorus will perform the National Anthem at the Xavier women’s basketball game against St. Bonaventure at 1:00 on February 1. A repeat performance will be before the men’s game on February 5 at 7:00 pm against Temple, which will be televised on ESPN.

For the fifth year, Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati will take part in the Crosstown Preachout Mass. The event takes place Sunday, February 15 at the St. Monica-St. George Church, 328 West McMillan Street, home of UC’s Campus Ministry. Liturgy will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Under the coordination of Xavier University’s Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning, and with support from the Center for Teaching Excellence and the President’s Office, the University has created an Academy for Community-Engaged Faculty, which will focus on assisting faculty in incorporating principles and practices of community-engaged scholarship into their curricula as a primary means of institutionalizing and sustaining engagement at Xavier.

Xavier University students will dance all night to benefit Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center during the third annual Dance Marathon. This year’s theme is “Movies.” Participants will be on their feet from 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 6 to 9:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7 at the O’Connor Sports Center Gym on the Xavier campus, with breaks for meals and snacks every few hours. Visitors are welcome for a $5.00 entrance fee.

Wainscott, Chairman, President and CEO of AK Steel Corporation, will speak at Xavier University on Thursday, February 19 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. in Duff Banquet Hall located in Xavier’s Cintas Center. This is the first presentation for the Williams College of Business Distinguished Speakers Series for 2009. Mr. Wainscott will speak on “Competing to Win in Today’s Global Steel Business.”
