Xavier University Students Begin 2010 on Interfaith Jamaica Medical Mission Trip

From January 2-9, 2010 before classes resume at Xavier University in Cincinnati, thirteen Xavier students will cut short their holiday breaks and travel to Jamaica on an interfaith/medical mission trip.

This free lecture, open to the public, is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Leadership Council, the American Jewish Committee and the Bruggeman Center for Dialogue.

Xavier University’s offices of International Student Services, Marketing and Printing Services, department of Art and Canon are hosting Xavier University’s Fourth Annual International Photo Contest in which students capture different places around the world on film in a manner that exhibits high technical and artistic merit and a sense of place or culture outside the United States. Each participant may submit up to five entries.

Xavier University once again kicks off the holiday season with ‘A Xavier Christmas’ on Tuesday, December 8. Around 180 elementary school students from Hoffman-Parham, Frederick Douglass, Sharpsburg, Williams, South Avondale, and Norwood View schools will be special guests of the University and will be accompanied by more than 180 Xavier Buddies (students). The children will have an opportunity to meet Santa Claus, see a live nativity scene and partake in various crafts and activities.

Nearly Naked Mile to Benefit Interfaith Jamaica Medical Mission Trip

Xavier University students will shed "nearly all" their clothes and/or dress Jamaican-style, despite the chill, TOMORROW Thursday, November 19, at 8:00 p.m., for the newly-resurrected Nearly Naked Mile. Participants race one mile through the Xavier campus to raise funds to send 13 pre-professional health students to service in Jamaica from January 2-9.

On November 16, 1989, six prominent Jesuit priests, including the rector and vice rector of El Salvador's most prestigious university, were killed along with two others at the house as they slept. The Jesuits were labeled subversives by the Salvadoran government for speaking out against the oppressive socioeconomic structure of society. Their assassinations were ordered for their unwavering defense of the poor.

Of all the issues facing today’s world, none is more critical than the relationship between the Muslim world and the West. Xavier University’s Brueggeman Center for Dialogue will present John L. Esposito on November 18 at 7:30 pm in the Duff Banquet Center in Xavier’s Cintas Center. A showing of the film “Inside Islam,” which features Esposito will be shown in Kelley Auditorium in Alter Hall on Xavier’s campus on November 16 at 7:30 pm. Both events are free and open to the public.

Xavier becomes first StormReady® University in Ohio

On July 22, Xavier University became the first school in the state of Ohio to earn the National Weather Service StormReady® University recognition. In order to become StormReady®, Xavier University developed plans for severe weather, installed weather radios, and ensured that forecast products from the Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Wilmington, Ohio could be received and disseminated throughout the campus to students, faculty, and staff via several different methods.
