Xavier University’s Physical Plant staff will be recognized today during the 172nd undergraduate commencement ceremony at Xavier’s Cintas Center. The honor will be a surprise to the Physical Plant staff who will be attending today’s ceremony.

The Xavier University Army ROTC Program commissioned twenty-three cadets into the United States Army Officer Corps as Second Lieutenants on May 14 at 9:00 a.m. in the University’s Cintas Center. Fifteen cadets commissioned into the active Army and six into the United States Army Reserve.

Ashley Bonnell of Xavier University has been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study Arabic in Tunisia during the summer of 2010. Ashley is from Columbus, IN and is the daughter of Ethel and Richard Bonnell. She is a senior in Xavier’s Philosophy, Politics & The Public honors program, majoring in history with a minor in gender and diversity studies.

The top graduating senior at Xavier University in Cincinnati is honored as the John A. Elet, S.J. Scholar. Named after the first president of Xavier University, it recognizes a student for academic and service excellence. This year the honor goes to Medina’s Amber Beery.

Kathleen Baldwin from Naples, ME (04055), and Sarah Prebihalo from Columbus, OH (43221), have been chosen as Clare Boothe Luce Scholars for 2009-2011. Since its first grants in 1989, the Clare Boothe Luce Scholars Program has become the single most significant source of private support for women in science, mathematics and engineering.

Paintings which focus on the life and Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, will be on display at the Xavier University Art Gallery May16-June18, 2010. Titled Adsum: Contemporary Paintings on Ignatian Spirituality, the 25-piece oil and mixed media exhibit are the work of Xavier graduate Holly Schapker.

Thirty-seven Xavier University students were inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit honor society, on Saturday, April 17. Induction into Alpha Sigma Nu is one of the highest honors that can be given on a Jesuit campus. Candidates must be outstanding in scholarship, in loyalty and in service to the University.

Next week, April 19-23, Xavier University’s Office of Interfaith Community Engagement will sponsor “Golden Rule Week.” The event will kick-off at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 19, when students will begin to place a total of 60 yard signs around campus. Every 6th sign will have the golden rule, as presented from 1 of 10 different faith traditions.

The Developing Inclusive Schools Consortium (DISC) is a joint project of Developing Inclusive Schools Communities and Organizations (DISCO) and the Xavier Center for Excellence in Education (XCEED). Xavier University will host over 130 nationally-recognized universities at the 10th Annual Spring College Fair Sunday, April 25 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Cintas Center on the University campus. There is no charge and visitors do not have to RSVP. Plenty of free parking is available adjacent to the Cintas Center.
