The Psi Chi/Kay Wilson Leadership Award for Outstanding Chapter Presidents is presented annually to the one chapter president who demonstrates excellence in leadership of the local chapter. Mendota Heights, MN native and Xavier University alumna Elizabeth Fichtel is the winner of the 2009-10 Award.

Twenty-one people traveled to Guatemala from June 11-20. Nine students, eight practitioners, three faculty, and the Dean of Xavier’s College of Social Sciences, Health and Education participated. The students will follow up with more course-related activities this fall around servicing underprivileged populations. The practitioners donated their time and expertise.

Dawn M. Makley, a 2007 magna cum laude graduate of Xavier University, has co-authored an article published in the journal Nature. The research will aid medicinal chemists in making biologically-active compounds that might battle disease. Makley was a double major in chemical science and biology at Xavier and is currently a PhD candidate in chemistry at Vanderbilt University, working under the mentorship of Professor Jeffrey N. Johnston, a 1992 graduate of Xavier’s chemistry department.

On Tuesday, July 20 at approximately 10:00 a.m. the first move will be made to the new Michael J. Conaton Learning Commons (CLC) located on the southwest corner of Dana and Ledgewood Avenues. Other moves will be made during the rest of the week. The moves include Discovery Services and the math and writing academic labs. A total of 24 faculty and staff will be moved during the week.

Three Xavier University chemistry students from Kentucky have been recognized for excellence in their chemistry studies. Xavier’s average acceptance rate to medical schools over the past five years is about 80%, as compared with the national average of approximately 45%.

Entrepreneurs have flooded the X-LAB Competition with applications to obtain free consulting services from the Williams College of Business for help starting new businesses, nonprofits and social enterprises. One hundred and sixty-seven applications have been submitted to the Xavier Launch-a-Business Competition from people who want assistance to start businesses -- or expand existing ones -- in fields as diverse as clothing production, restaurant management and medical device manufacturing.

The Xavier University Women’s Center is again hosting “1000 PeaceWomen,” an exhibit first shown in January 2008 at the Center. It aims to connect and strengthen women's peace efforts around the globe so that a strong, cross-sectoral and global women's peace movement will emerge. The exhibit opens July 13 at the Women's Center located at 1415 Dana Avenue and will be open to the public from 8:30-5, Monday through Friday. Admission to the exhibit is free.

Twenty years after it was torn down, a piece of the Berlin Wall is going back up – this time as a monument to freedom. On July 3 from 5:30-9:30 pm, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will dedicate a graffiti-covered 4-by-13-foot section of the Berlin Wall as a monument to its fall in 1989.

Xavier University has been awarded a grant to develop and implement Xavier’s New Teacher Academy to support the needs of first-third year teachers in Greater Cincinnati. The pilot program will be offered free of charge to 30 teachers during the 2010-2011 academic year. Applications are currently being accepted.

Mona Breitbeil of Cincinnati (45238) has received the first Jesuit Heritage Grant Award from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. The purpose of the grant is to further the recognition of Jesuit Identity in the College and promote the educational outcome that graduates of Xavier are men and women for others standing for justice and peace. She received $500 toward the purchase of program textbooks from the Xavier Bookstore.

Elizabeth Groppe, associate professor of Theology at Xavier University, has been awarded a $40,000 grant from the Louisville Institute for a research sabbatical from January 1 to August 31, 2011 to research a book entitled “Guarding the Flame of the Grandeur of God: Christian Life and Practice in an Era of Ecological Crisis.”

Five years ago tonight, people of many faiths opened an historic exhibition: “A Blessing to One Another: Pope John Paul II and the Jewish People.” This multi-media exhibit ran from May 19 - July 15, 2005 at Xavier University, and includes photos, video footage, documents and artifacts recording the extraordinary contributions of Pope John Paul II to relations between the Catholic and Jewish faiths.

Not only will kids enjoy a day at the ballpark, but they will also experience an education fair. The Freedom will take on the Southern Illinois Miners. This will also be the third season in which Xavier sponsors its X-Treme Reading Club.
