Kam Wong has been invited to give a public lecture and conduct a seminar at Hong Kong University’s Policing Studies Forum September 2 and 3 on his upcoming books. He will speak on “Police Reform in China” and “Cyberspace Governance in China.” Wong is associate professor of Criminal Justice at Xavier University. He was an Inspector of Police with the Hong Kong Police and a practicing attorney. He holds a PhD in Criminal Justice from SUNY Albany, and a JD from Indiana University, Bloomington. He w

Xavier University is participating in the President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge, an initiative led by the White House and supported by the Department of Education and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). On August 3, Rabbi Abie Ingber, founding director of Xavier’s Office of Interfaith Community Engagement, traveled to the White House to help launch the challenge.

From September 6 through October 10, Xavier University will present Die Weiße Rose (White Rose) exhibit on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Gallagher Student Center. Presented by Xavier’s Office of Interfaith Community Engagement, Xavier’s German Language Program, Weisse Rose Foundation, and Lord Mayor Christian Ude of Munich, 47 black and white photographs with accompanying text introduce the story of Die Weiße Rose. The exhibit opening at 5:30pm on September 6 will be followed by a reception.

Xavier University will host the 2nd Annual Africa Foundation-USA Summit on September 17 from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm in The James and Caroline Duff Banquet Center at Xavier’s Cintas Center. This year’s theme is “Global Economic Expansion to Africa.” Topics to be discussed include: doing business in Africa, human relations, culture, immigration, financial planning and education. Two days after first-year students come to campus, sophomores will begin moving into Xavier University’s newest and largest residence complex on Sunday, August 21. The best time to catch students and their families will be between 1-3 pm that day. The entire complex is 245,000 square feet and is the second largest building on campus next the Cintas Center.

In 2009, Xavier University’s School of Nursing received a grant of almost $1.5 million from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The largest federal grant in the University’s history was awarded through HRSA’s Nurse Education, Practice and Retention (NEPR) program, which addresses the nursing shortage by funding projects that strengthen and enhance the capacity for educating and retaining nurses.

Dr. Stephen Yandell, associate professor of English, was awarded The Bishop Fenwick Teacher of the Year Award, presented by Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit honor society. The Bishop Fenwick Teacher of the Year Award is given to a professor who has a profound impact on a wide range of students. It was presented by Brett Simmons, vice president of Alpha Sigma Nu.
