The Great Debate at Xavier University

On Friday, February 10, students from Xavier University, Wilberforce University, and Miami University (OH) will debate and showcase their musical and artistic talents during The Great Debate. The Great Debate promotes cultural, intellectual, moral, philosophical and spiritual principles of leadership, debates and artistic expression. This FREE event will be at 7 pm in Xavier University’s Gallagher Center Theater and is open to the public.

This summer, the Xavier University Army ROTC Program will send six cadets all over the world as participants in the U.S. Army’s Cultural Understanding and Language Proficiency (CULP) Program. This is the most cadets ever participating in one summer. The program provides cadets with a 30-day experience in a different country to gain an understanding of different cultures they could find themselves in as officers.

Xavier University’s Chris Schadler, a Cincinnati urban planner, music promoter and entrepreneur, will chair a panel and present at the “Second Global Conference on Urban Popcultures” in Prague, Czech Republic, March 9-11, 2012. Schadler will focus on the Over The Rhine (OTR) and Northside neighborhoods of Cincinnati and discuss how local music culture has positively affected each neighborhood’s quality of life.

Health care providers from Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Michigan are attending a national conference at Xavier to explore affordable health care initiatives for diverse populations. The all-day conference takes place on Friday, Feb. 24, at the Schiff Family Conference Center at the Cintas Center. Attendance is free but registration is required. The deadline to register is Friday, Feb. 17.

Michele Bailes of Liberty Township, a full time American Sign Language instructor at Xavier University, asked her four classes if they would be interested in adopting one family at Christmas to give them a fresh start in a new year. The result was a unanimous 80-0 in favor. The students were responsible for finding a family - not by going to an agency, but by finding a family in their midst which needed help.

A team led by Xavier University MBA international student Rudhir Patil recently won the 14th annual Venture Capital Investment Competition of Silicon Valley at Santa Clara University. Patil is in California working, but is taking his capstone class online with Xavier. Originally from India, he came to Xavier via New Zealand, where he is a citizen. Via the Jesuit MBA Network, he is also a visiting student at Santa Clara University.

Ethics Bowl Team Advances

For the past three years, Xavier University has sent a five-person team to the Regional Ethics Bowl, Central States in Indianapolis. On Saturday, November 12, the team qualified for the first time in the school's history for the National Ethics Bowl, placing second out of 22 teams.
