Janice B. Walker is the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. She is responsible for the academic and professional leadership of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Walker's career at Xavier began as a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in 1980. After serving as Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science for seven years, she was appointed Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1999, becoming the first female and the first African American to serve as a college dean in Xavier’s history. Throughout her tenure at the University, Dr. Walker has been a strong advocate of academic excellence, faculty development, diversity and inclusion, and undergraduate research.
Engaged in the local community, Dr. Walker has memberships on boards including M²SE (Minorities in Mathematics, Science and Engineering), the African American Advisory Council of the Cincinnati Museum Center, and the Queen City Foundation. She has also been an active member of the American Conference of Academic Deans (ACAD) and the AJCU Arts and Sciences Deans Council for more than a dozen years. Her contributions at the University and in the local and professional communities have been recognized by awards and citations including her selection as a YWCA Career Woman of Achievement in 2007.
Dean Walker holds a BS in mathematics from Tuskegee University and MS and PhD degrees in mathematics from the University of Michigan. The areas supervised by the Dean include:
