The centerpiece of the program is Le Tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel, who served as a
truck and ambulance driver at the front. Each movement of the work was dedicated to close
friends who had fallen in the war. Trench songs, soldier's letters, the music of Bartok and
Debussy round out the evening, painting rich personal portraits of the human spirit during one of
the bloodiest wars in human history.
