- Fortin joined the University in 1966 as an assistant professor of history. During his nearly 40 years at Xavier he has been promoted to the rank of professor, served as chair of the Department of History and performed various administrative duties, ranging from director of the library and dean of Edgecliff College to associate academic vice president and acting academic vice president. Fortin has published several articles and books on various aspects of American history. In 2002, Ohio State University Press published his book Faith and Action: A History of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati, and in fall 2006 Scranton University Press published To See Great Wonders, his history of Xavier University.
