Celebration of Student Research

Student Research at National Conferences

In 2004, several biology students had abstracts of their work accepted at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR), held in Indianapolis, where they presented their work to a multidisciplinary audience from across the country. All Biology and Natural Sciences majors are required to do senior research, and many present it at Xavier's Celebration of Student Research as well.

Chris Kluener (right) presents his work with Dr. Chuck Grossman mathematically describing the sounds recorded from captive manatees at the Cincinnati Zoo. Manatees are large, endangered mammals native to Florida.

Sara Nine (left) and Allegra Tenkman present their poster on behalf of Dr. Chuck Grossman and his other research students. They spent the year recording and processing audio data from the manatees. This research may inspire ways to increase manatee avoidance of the boats that currently threaten their existence.

Dave Chess (right) discusses research he and Kelly Curran conducted on metalloborane synthesis with Dr. Craig Davis in the Xavier Chemistry Department. The team was trying to create new approaches for making copper derivatives of octahydrotriborate anions.

Beth Sikora explains the work she did with Dr. Dan McLoughlin in the Chemistry Department. Beth helped design an exercise for students to illustrate the principles of NMR spectroscopy on a product of Diels-Alder reactions.

Kelly Curran, a senior chemistry major, presents her work to Representative Steve Chabot (R) on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. as part of the Posters on the Hill conference. Kelly did research with Dr. Jen Robbins and Dr. Laura Conforti at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where she studied the effects of low oxygen on human T cells. She also presented her work at NCUR.
