Medical Technology

Medical technology is one of the Allied Health professions. Technologists perform various microscopic, chemical, serological and microbiological procedures on body fluids and tissues to provide data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Xavier's medical technology majors, upon graduation, are equipped with an aptitude for scientific work. They know how to deal with routine as well as unexpected work demands. They are dependable, methodical, precise, self-sufficient individuals. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in medical technology and are headed for a career that is satisfying, challenging and rewarding.

Students majoring in medical technology complete 19 semester hours of biology, 18 semester hours of chemistry and eight semester hours of physics. It is not a technical program. To strengthen and broaden the science concentration, a liberal arts core curriculum is also a part of the program, which allows students to easily change majors to biology, chemistry, chemical science, physics, or natural sciences (pre-med), should career plans change.

Medical technology is a 3+1 program, meaning three years of undergraduate study here and 12 months away from campus gaining clinical experience at a hospital. In the third year, students must apply and be accepted at a hospital accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation and approved by the University. While many students have completed clinical experiences outside of Cincinnati, it is not necessary to do so. Xavier is affiliated with two area hospitals: St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood, KY and the Medical Technology Program of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Senior Year

The B.S. degree in medical technology will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the fourth year (12 months) of study at an accredited NAACLS (National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences) School of Medical Technology administered by a hospital and approved by Xavier University. After passing an examination administered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), the graduate becomes a Registered Medical Technologist.

A student may also elect to complete the Bachelor of Science degree in biology or natural sciences, then apply to any hospital-based program in medical technology accredited by NAACLS.

Scheduling Notes:

  • Consult the Undergraduate Core Curriculum description on page 93 of the catalog.
  • E/R&S Focus Elective requirement may be used to satisfy another element of the Core or the major.
  • A minimum of 131 credit hours is required for the degree upon 36 hours completion of a fourth year at an approved hospital.
