Q. What is an overdraft and what can I do to prevent this from happening?

A. An overdraft occurs when your Available Balance goes below zero, and there are no funds to cover a withdrawal or payment. Listed below are the choices you can make about how you would like to conduct business with U.S. Bank and your daily transactions using your check card.

Customer Choice
In the past, U.S. Bank automatically provided overdraft coverage for all types of transactions (everyday check card purchases, ATM withdrawals, checks, U.S. Bank Internet Bill Pay and recurring check card purchases). The new policy allows new and current consumer checking account customers to either "opt in" or "opt out" of overdraft coverage:

  • If a customer "opts in:" U.S. Bank covers ATM and everyday check card transactions when there is not enough money in teh customer's account, providing the protection in an unexpected emergency and avoiding the inconvenience for the customer of having the transaction declined. The customer pays overdraft fees if we authorize and pay an overdraft item.
  • If a customer "opts out:" U.S. Bank does not authorize and pay ATM and everyday check card transactions, nor assess overdraft fees if the customer has insufficient funds in his or her checking account.

Improved Fee Structure
In addition to giving customers a voice in how we handle their accounts, we've restructured fees that cover all tyeps of items (checks, ACH, U.S. Bank Internet Bill Pay, ATM and Check Card transactions) regardless of their opt-in or opt-out election:

  • Effective August 15, 2010, $10 fee per overdraft/NSF item of $20 or less - far lower than the fees of any other major bank in America.
  • $33 fee for overdraft items over $20
  • Overdraft fees are capped at 3 per day, changed from 6 per day
  • Overdraft item fees will now be waived if an account is overdrawn by $10 or less
  • Extended overdraft fee changed from $8/day after the fifth day to $25/week after the first week
  • We provide customers with multiple ways to avoid overdrafts; including our industry-leading set of overdraft protection options, such as linking another deposit account, credit line or U.S. Bank credit card to the checking account to cover overdrafts. We also encourage customers to use free text or email alerts to better monitor account balances and to know when certain size transactions move through their accounts.

Q. Are there U.S. Bank ATM's on campus and where are they located?

A. Yes, there are 4. Cintas Center dining hall, Gallagher Student Cener, Smith Hall and outside Kuhlman Hall.

Q. What information do I need to bring to the branch when I make a transaction?

A. When you make any U.S. Bank transaction, we will need your U.S. Bank account number and a government issued I.D. (Driver's License, State I.D., or Passport). We cannot locate your account information using your ALL Card or student identification number and most cash transactions require us to verify your identity. If you are making a deposit or withdrawal transaction, please use a deposit or withdrawal slip available in the branch.
