Our recently released National Civic Literacy Survey received widespread media attention. From USA Today and Time to Univision Noticias and ABC News, the fact that one in three native-born Americans fail the same civic literacy test that immigrants overwhelmingly pass (97.5%) in order to gain American citizenship, hit a nerve.
Ironically, we also discovered that 77% of native-born citizens agreed that all Americans should be able to pass this test.
Why is this important to us here at the Center? It is our strong contention that civic illiteracy is a threat to the American Dream because it is a threat to the freedom we treasure.
Election Day is upon us. Civic illiteracy is directly related to civic participation. The less we know, the less likely we are to participate, and the more likely we are to be victims of political manipulation.
