of Cincinnati was presented the “2012 Distinguished Contributions to the Profession Award” at the annual meeting of the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys in November. The award is given to recognize senior practitioners for their long-standing contributions to the profession. Cussen is also a member of The American Board of Trial Advocates and was installed as the president of the Cincinnati chapter in November. He has been a practicing attorney for 42 years and is a partner in the firm of McCaslin, Imbus and McCaslin.

Jim Dissen ’66 MBA
retired as senior vice president of corporate development from Triana Energy in May, and is now chairman and chief executive officer of Highland Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in Charleston, W.Va., where he has served on the board since 1992 and as chairman since 2005. After earning his law degree from Duquesne University, he began working for Columbia Gas System in Pittsburgh, which sent him to Charleston for a year. He never left. He rose through the ranks, becoming vice president of Columbia Natural Resources, the company’s natural gas exploration and drilling subsidiary. When CNR was sold in 2001, Dissen and several others formed their own energy company, Triana Energy, which ended up buying CNR two years later. In 2005, Triana sold CNR to Chesapeake Energy Corp. and made an estimated $1.87 billion profit. Dissen is also chairman of Star USA Federal Credit Union, and sits on the boards of Wheeling Jesuit University and the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

joined the board of directors of the National Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting. He is also a board member and vice chairman of the Advanced Television Systems Committee, an industry committee establishing standards for digital television and mobile digital TV technology, and serves as chairman of the Open Mobile Video Coalition Forum. Previously, he served on both of the Federal Communications Commission’s media security and recovery councils, and as an advisor to the FCC on the digital television transition. Adrick led teams that designed and built broadcast facilities including The Golf Channel, The Weather Channel, The Discovery Channel and National Public Radio. He is a Fellow of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, and a member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers. His primary job is vice president of broadcast technology at Harris Corp. Previously, he co-founded and was executive vice president of Midwest Communications Corp. Before entering the commercial broadcasting world, Adrick was a professor of communications at Xavier, director of radio and the television production center, and co-founded WVXU radio. He lives in Madeira with his wife Mary Ann. His hobbies include amateur radio, sailing and O-gauge model trains.

of Philo, Ohio, was re-elected to the board of trustees for the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, representing members from Guernsey, Morgan, Muskingum and Perry counties. He has served as District 16 trustee for the past three years. Swingle is a 43-year member of Muskingum County Farm Bureau, where he has served as president and trustee. He produces beef and specialty crops. He is retired from Zane State College, where he was an assistant professor. He is involved with Muskingum Hills Ruritan, Franklin Local school board, Lions Club, Muskingum County Planning Commission and St. John’s Lutheran Church. He and his wife, Gail, are the parents of two grown children.

Smith is a consultant for High Schools That Work and previously served as interim principal for New Richmond Exempted Village School District in 2012 and as superintendent for the Bethel-Tate Local School District from 1998-2011. During that time he led the district to three “excellent” ratings, while meeting all Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals, and attained an “excellent with distinction” rating in 2010. He spent more than 20 years with the U.S. Grant Vocational School District, serving at various times as principal, director of adult education and job placement, and as a social studies teacher. He attended the Harvard University School Leadership Institute in 2001.

In addition to graduating from and teaching at Xavier, Larkin grew up at Xavier—her father, Bill Larkin, has taught in the Department of Mathematics for 43 years.

was named by Governing Magazine as its “Public Official of the Year” for his leadership as city manager of Joplin City, Mo. More than one-third of the town was wiped out by an EF5 tornado last May, with 161 people killed, 500 more injured, 7,500 homes destroyed and 540 businesses impacted. Rohr was city manager in Piqua, Mo., prior to moving to Joplin.

product group by CareSource, a nonprofit managed health care company in Dayton, Ohio. In addition to being responsible for market and product strategy, he’s also charged with supporting the partnership between CareSource and Humana as its expands to new states and introduces new product lines like the health benefit exchange. He’s now accountable for product performance including member growth and satisfaction. Ringel joined CareSource in 2011 and most recently served as vice president of operations, managing the enrollment and member service departments. Before he joined CareSource, he spent 18 years at Humana in information systems, customer satisfaction and as vice president of customer care.

Before joining KPMG, Shehata served in several health care IT leadership roles with Cisco, WellPoint, IBM and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Stephen Hoerst II ’94 BS
was promoted to sergeant in the Cincinnati Police Department. Hoerst has been with the department since entering the police academy’s 84th recruit class in July 1997. A U.S. Army veteran, he was first assigned to patrol in District 1. He later served in District 4 and District 2, where he’s been since December 2006. According to the department, the hallmark of his performance has been customer service, with numerous people writing to thank him over the years for the courtesy and consideration he showed when they required police services. Several members of his family have also made their careers in law enforcement. His father, Sgt. Stephen Hoerst Sr., retired after serving 30 years with the Cincinnati Police. Three of his uncles and a great-uncle also served with the department.

of Buffalo, N.Y., presented an update on federal and New York state tax law for not-for-profit entities at the Institute on Taxation at the University at Buffalo School of Management in November. Tzetzo is a member of the executive committee and tax practice group at the corporate law firm of Jaeckle Fleischmann and Mugel. She has extensive experience in tax and business matters including corporation and partnership formation, mergers and acquisitions, debt and equity financing, as well as contract matters, including preparation and negotiation of transactional documents. She also provides counsel to nonprofit organizations in connection with entity formation, board governance, regulatory compliance and establishment of foundations.

In addition to appraising businesses, he has appraised intellectual property, including patents and trademarks. His consulting experience on behalf of ESOPs includes feasibility studies, implementation of ESOPs, purchases of large blocks of stock, annual updates, sales of ESOP companies and acquisitions of companies by ESOP companies. He is a senior member of the American Society of Appraisers.

gave a talk at NASA’s Langley Research Center on how the research-based collaboration between the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech University, Virginia State University and a group of global manufacturing companies is a game-changing model for growing the advanced manufacturing sector in the U.S. and globally. Lohr is president and executive director of the Hampton, Va.-based Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing, a unique applied research center that bridges the gap between fundamental research typically performed at universities and product development routinely performed by companies. Prior to joining CCAM, Lohr was vice president of business development for the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park and executive director of the park’s business incubation programs. He is a founding member and past chairman of the Virginia Tech Chemical Engineering Department advisory board, and is a member of the Virginia Tech College of Engineering committee of 100 and College of Engineering advisory board.

His poetry has been published in the anthologies Against Agamemnon: War Poetry and Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors, as well as in various journals such as The Licking River Review, The Chaffin Journal and The Heartland Review.

He also served as a debate prep strategist for the Mitt Romney and John McCain presidential campaigns. From 2007-2010, he worked as an analyst at the law firm of Squire, Sanders and Dempsey.
