Xavier offers
numerous support services to assist students in achieving
their academic, career and personal development goals.
Academic
advising
All undergraduate students are assigned an academic advisor to provide
assistance in developing educational plans and goals. Students with declared
majors are advised by department chairs or designated faculty advisors
in the departments. Undeclared students are assigned an academic advisor
in the academic advising center, the Williams College of Business (undecided–business),
or the center for adult and part-time students. Students meet with their
advisors a minimum of twice a year.
Pre-professional health advising
The office of pre-professional health advising, in addition to advising
students interested in pre-med and pre-dental (among other fields), provides
support to the student pre-med society, organizes student group visits
to medical schools, and holds mock medical school interviews and mock
MCAT test sessions. The health sciences committee is available to discuss
the diverse career options in the health professions and to help students
over the many hurdles in preparation for, and application to, professional
programs in the health sciences, such as schools of medicine, dentistry,
osteopathic medicine, podiatric medicine, veterinary medicine and optometry.
Students who are interested in these careers should meet at least once
a semester with the coordinator of pre-professional health advising.
Both the coordinator and members of the health sciences committee are
available for counseling in matters pertaining to career choices, admissions
to
professional
schools
and academic programs in the health sciences.
Instructional
technology services
Instructional technology services support six major computing labs on
campus. Five of the labs have predominantly PC workstations, with a few
Macintoshes in each lab, while the sixth lab is an all-MAC lab. Laser
printing is available in all of the labs, which are located on the central
campus in Alter Hall and the CBA building, and in Elet Hall and the Cohen
Center. A 24-hour lab in the Kuhlman Residence Hall is available to
all campus users. The center for academic computing regularly offers
in-service training workshops and seminars for Xavier faculty and staff
in the productive use of software applications and utilities. A new student
help desk is now available to serve as a source of support information
to assist students in solving technology-related issues.
Learning
assistance center
The mission of Xavier's learning assistance center is threefold: ensuring
students with disabilities can freely and actively participate in all
facets of university life; providing and coordinating support services
to maximize students' educational potential and develop their independence;
and increasing the level of awareness among all members of the university
community so that students with disabilities are able to perform at a
level limited only by their abilities, not their disabilities.
Student success and retention
The office of student success and retention is the primary retention center at Xavier University. The director and assistant director offer a unique service as the advocates for all undergraduate students. By providing an ombudsman who aids students in solving problems, Xavier demonstrates its care and concern for the individual. At the office of student success and retention there is an emphasis on the freshman class and their social, personal and academic adjustment to college.
Writing
center
The James A. Glenn Writing Center provides assistance with all aspects
of the writing process to all Xavier students, regardless of their level
of ability or field of study. Undergraduate peer tutors, graduate tutors
and the director serve as instructors. The center has a library of writing-related
references and provides computers and printers for those who need a quiet
place to write.
Math
tutoring
The math tutoring lab provides help for students in all undergraduate
math courses. A faculty member, a graduate student and a few undergraduate
math majors staff the lab. A tutor is available at all times the lab
is open.
Students also may use the lab as a study area. No appointments are necessary.
Additional support
services are available to students from a variety of
offices across campus:
