"Xavier’s
mission is to educate. Our essential activity is the interaction
of students and faculty in an educational experience characterized
by critical thinking and articulate expression with special
attention given to ethical issues and values."
- from Xavier University’s
Mission Statement
Inside and outside of Xavier’s
classrooms, laboratories and studios, students are challenged
to make the most of the many opportunities available
to explore academic life and to grow intellectually,
socially and spiritually.
At the heart of an outstanding university
is an exceptional faculty. The University’s 263
full-time faculty members, 80 percent of whom have attained
the highest degree possible in their field, include nationally
recognized scholars. Xavier’s professors demonstrate
more than a mastery of their disciplines. They exhibit
a passion for teaching and concern for each student.
The foundation of Xavier’s success
is now what it has always been: its commitment to its
Jesuit heritage. The core
curriculum endeavors to realize and embody Xavier’s
mission and philosophy of education and serves as the
educational foundation for all undergraduate students.
Within the core, the four-course ethics/religion
and society focus fosters students’ understanding
of socially significant issues from the perspectives
of the humanities, especially literature, philosophy
and theology, as well as from the perspectives of the
social and natural sciences. Students complement their
core courses with in-depth study in a major and are encouraged
to participate in the wide range of co-curricular programs
offered by the University.
Xavier’s graduate programs also
remain true to the 450-year-old Jesuit
tradition of addressing society’s needs and
concerns. Graduate study at Xavier develops each student’s
capacity for making a positive difference in society.
Xavier graduates throughout Greater Cincinnati and the
world serve as teachers and administrators, supervise
social service agencies, minister in churches and temples,
and manage businesses.
