The Passing of a Legacy

M. Virginia Scardina

03/29/07

Sadly, the death of “Ginny” Scardina is announced. Ginny was known as the “heart” of sensory integration. As an occupational therapist she taught and mentored countless other occupational therapists from around the world. Ginny contributed significantly to the profession of occupational therapy with her endless energy and advocacy for the profession, for students, and for children and their families. Ginny promoted best practice through education and research continuously prodding us all to add to the body of knowledge. She touched and inspired us, clients, students, and colleagues to strive to do our best. Ginny was a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend.

Ginny’s passing is a great loss to the profession of occupational therapy, and especially to Xavier University’s Department of Occupational Therapy as Ginny was near and dear to our hearts. Yet, her legacy will continue on, not only through all of us who knew her and loved her but also through a scholarship fund that was established in her name. The “Virginia Scardina Interdisciplinary Education Award” is given out annually to an exemplary student in her/her final year of the Xavier University Master of Occupational Therapy Program who shows commitment to and excellence in occupational therapy and education. With gratitude, our Department of Occupational Therapy is honored to have her memorials sent to this student scholarship fund. Ginny’s love for teaching, learning, and students will continue. Thank you, Ginny.
